Das Pfennig-Magazin Nr. 4 untersucht die Art und Weise, auf die die miszellanen Inhalte periodischer Publikationen im 19. Jahrhundert geordnet werden. Es präsentiert theoretische Modelle der Aushandlung zwischen zentrifugalen und zentripetalen Elementen von Zeitschriften, peritextuelle Verfahren der Rubrizierung sowie Konsequenzen des Formatwechsels zum Buch. Die vier Beiträge stellen zunächst aktuelle Debatten über die Gleichzeitigkeit von Miszellaneität und Ordnung in Einzelheften, Jahrgangsbänden und Indices vor und präsentieren im Anschluss daran drei Fallstudien zum Wechselverhältnis von Heterogenität und Ordnung in unterschiedlichen Veröffentlichungsformaten: Die Strategien der nachträglichen Systematisierung von Themen und Genres in Karl Gutzkows Unterhaltungen am häuslichen Herd, die Adressierung des Archivs von Zeitschriftenartikeln in Pooles Index to Periodical Literature und Jean Pauls Konzeption des Romans D. Katzenbergers Badereise (1809) als miszellane Anthologie.
Penny Magazine No. 4 focuses on the ways miscellaneous periodical content is subjected to order in the nineteenth century. It discusses theoretical models for negotiating the centrifugal and centripetal elements of periodical publication, the peritextual procedures through which periodicals are classified, and the formatting power of the book. The four contributions address the simultaneity of miscellaneity and order in individual issues, annual volumes, and general indexes of periodicals. After general theoretical reflections about popular German magazines in the second half of the 19th century, they present three case studies in the mutual transformation of order and disorder in a specific periodical context: the first considers Karl Gutzkow’s Unterhaltungen am häuslichen Herd and its categorization of subjects and genres; the second examines Poole’s Index to Periodical Literature, which turned the periodical archive into a repository of content; and the third Jean Paul’s D. Katzenberger’s Journey to the Bath (1809), a novel that is, at the same time, an anthology of miscellaneous articles.
